2 LP - Bleak and evocative, Albuquerque duo A Hawk and a Hacksaw play and enchanting, off-kilter derivation of eastern Euopean folk. Their third album recalls the wailing poignancy of klezmar, the old-time Yiddish ghetto music, and mixes this with the harmonic idiosyncrasy of acid folk and string-drawn gypsy waltzes. Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeremy Barnes and violinist Heather Trost are supported here by the gypsy brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia - and their uplifting, bucolic ballardry on tracks such as 'In the River' is as startling and curious as anything thay have produced.
